Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a plant native to the Amazon basin and has traditionally been used for its stimulant and medicinal properties. Recent scientific research has explored guarana’s potential as an antioxidant, which relates to its proposed use in supporting the body against free radical damage. Guarana seeds are rich in bioactive compounds, notably caffeine, theobromine, catechins, and tannins, many of which possess antioxidant properties. In vitro studies have demonstrated that guarana extracts can neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in cell cultures. Some animal studies have further supported these findings, showing that guarana supplementation can increase antioxidant enzyme activity and decrease markers of oxidative damage.
