Evidence supporting the use of: Pterostilbene
For the health condition: Free Radical Damage
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Pterostilbene is a natural compound structurally related to resveratrol and is found in blueberries and Pterocarpus marsupium. It has attracted scientific interest for its potential antioxidant properties, particularly its ability to counteract free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress, implicated in aging and various diseases. Several preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that pterostilbene exhibits strong antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and upregulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. For instance, studies have shown that pterostilbene supplementation can reduce markers of oxidative stress in animal models subjected to induced oxidative damage.
However, while these results are promising, clinical evidence in humans is limited. A small number of human studies have assessed pterostilbene’s safety and pharmacokinetics, but robust clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in reducing oxidative stress or preventing related diseases are lacking. Thus, while the use of pterostilbene for supporting the body against free radical damage is scientifically plausible and supported by preclinical data, the overall evidence is moderate (rating 3/5) due to the lack of large-scale human studies. More research is needed to confirm its benefits in humans and to establish effective dosing regimens.
