Wheat germ is commonly promoted for its antioxidant properties, which are directly relevant to the mitigation of free radical damage in the body. Scientific validation for this use is rooted in the nutrient composition of wheat germ, which is particularly rich in vitamin E (tocopherols), a well-established lipid-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals, preventing oxidative damage to cell membranes and other structures. In addition, wheat germ contains other antioxidants, such as polyphenols and selenium, which may contribute to its free radical scavenging ability.
Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that wheat germ extract can reduce markers of oxidative stress and enhance antioxidant enzyme activities. For example, research has shown that wheat germ supplementation increases plasma antioxidant capacity and reduces lipid peroxidation in animal models.
