Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Barleria species, particularly Barleria prionitis and related plants, have a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Unani, for the treatment of various skin ailments, including fungal infections. Traditional healers have employed Barleria leaf and root preparations as topical applications to treat ringworm, eczema, and other dermatological conditions believed to be of fungal origin. The rationale for its use is largely based on folkloric knowledge and centuries-old ethnomedical practices.

Scientific validation of Barleria's antifungal activity is limited but growing. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated mild to moderate antifungal effects of Barleria extracts (including B. prionitis and B. cristata) against certain dermatophytes and Candida species. The antifungal activity is thought to be due to the presence of phytochemicals such as flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and phenolic compounds. However, these studies are mostly preliminary, conducted in laboratory settings and not yet confirmed in clinical trials. Thus, while there is some emerging scientific interest, the primary justification for using Barleria in fungal infections remains rooted in traditional medicine, and the overall level of scientific evidence is still relatively low (rated 2/5).
