Bisabolene is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene found in the essential oils of various plants, notably in chamomile and some herbs. Its use in supporting or treating fungal infections is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that bisabolene and its derivatives possess antifungal properties against a range of pathogenic fungi, such as Candida albicans, Aspergillus species, and Trichophyton species, which are common culprits in human fungal infections.
The mechanism by which bisabolene exhibits antifungal activity is believed to involve disruption of the fungal cell membrane, leading to cell death. However, the majority of research so far has been limited to laboratory (in vitro) settings, and there have been no large-scale clinical trials in humans to confirm its efficacy or safety for treating fungal infections. Despite these promising preliminary results, bisabolene is not a standard antifungal treatment in clinical practice, and its use is generally experimental or as part of broader essential oil preparations.
