Cajeput oil, derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca cajuputi tree, has a history of traditional use for various skin ailments, including those caused by fungi. Modern scientific studies have investigated its efficacy against fungal pathogens. The essential oil contains compounds such as 1,8-cineole, α-terpineol, and limonene, which have demonstrated antifungal activity in vitro. Research has shown that cajeput oil exhibits inhibitory effects against dermatophytes and Candida species, which are responsible for many common fungal infections. However, most of the scientific evidence is limited to laboratory studies (in vitro) rather than clinical trials in humans. These studies suggest that cajeput oil can disrupt fungal cell membranes or interfere with fungal metabolism, leading to reduced growth or cell death. Despite these promising findings, there is currently a lack of robust clinical evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of cajeput oil for treating fungal infections in humans. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for its use, the evidence base remains limited, and more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and determine appropriate dosing and safety considerations.
