Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Camphor has traditionally been used in various cultures as a topical remedy for a range of skin conditions, including fungal infections such as ringworm and athlete's foot. Its use in this context is largely based on historical and folk medicine practices, particularly in South and East Asia. Camphor is known for its cooling sensation and mild anesthetic properties, which can relieve itching and discomfort associated with skin infections. However, there is little high-quality scientific evidence supporting camphor’s direct antifungal activity or efficacy against fungal pathogens in humans. Most modern pharmacological studies focus on camphor’s analgesic, anti-inflammatory, or antimicrobial effects, with only limited in vitro evidence suggesting possible antifungal properties. Nonetheless, these effects have not been robustly demonstrated in clinical trials or established as part of standard medical treatment. Therefore, while camphor is still found in some traditional topical preparations for fungal infections, its use is based more on historical precedent than on scientific validation, and it should not be considered a primary or evidence-based antifungal treatment.
