Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Copaiba oil, derived from the resin of Copaifera trees native to South America, has a long-standing use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including skin conditions. More recently, scientific studies have begun to investigate its antimicrobial properties. Laboratory (in vitro) studies have demonstrated that copaiba oil and its main constituent, β-caryophyllene, possess antifungal activity against several pathogenic fungi, including Candida species and dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum. These findings suggest a scientific basis for its use in managing fungal infections. However, most of the evidence is limited to test-tube experiments and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans that confirm its efficacy and safety for treating fungal infections. The current scientific evidence, while promising, is preliminary and insufficient to recommend copaiba oil as a primary or standalone treatment for fungal infections. Further well-designed human studies are needed to establish its therapeutic potential, optimal dosing, and safety profile in this context.
