Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa), is primarily used in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Hedyotis is often incorporated into herbal formulations to "clear heat" and "detoxify," and it is sometimes referenced for use in treating infections, including those with presumed fungal involvement, such as certain skin conditions. However, the direct use of Hedyotis for fungal infections is based more on empirical traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. There are some laboratory studies investigating the antimicrobial properties of Hedyotis species, but these are mostly preliminary, focus more on antibacterial rather than antifungal activity, and do not directly support clinical use for fungal infections in humans. Systematic reviews or high-quality clinical trials specifically validating its antifungal effects are lacking. Therefore, while Hedyotis may be used traditionally for conditions that could involve fungal pathogens, this use is not strongly substantiated by modern scientific research, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for fungal infections remains weak.
