Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as mānuka, is recognized scientifically for its antimicrobial properties, including antifungal activity. The plant's essential oil, particularly mānuka oil, has been investigated in several studies for its efficacy against a variety of fungi. In vitro research has demonstrated that mānuka oil exhibits inhibitory effects against pathogenic fungi such as Trichophyton species (responsible for athlete’s foot and other dermal infections), Candida albicans, and others. The antifungal action is attributed mainly to β-triketones and other unique compounds present in the oil.

A notable study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (Carson & Riley, 1995) reported that mānuka oil displayed significantly higher antifungal activity than tea tree oil against certain dermatophytes. Other laboratory studies have confirmed the broad-spectrum antifungal potential of mānuka extracts.

However, while laboratory (in vitro) evidence is promising, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans to conclusively validate its effectiveness for treating fungal infections in practice. Most evidence supporting its use is preclinical. Therefore, while scientific research substantiates its antifungal potential, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and largely laboratory-based, rather than based on human clinical outcomes.
