Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mangostin, particularly alpha-mangostin, is a xanthone compound derived from the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana). There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting that mangostin possesses antifungal properties, primarily demonstrated in in vitro studies. Several laboratory experiments have shown that alpha-mangostin can inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi, such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, by disrupting fungal cell membranes and inhibiting biofilm formation (PubMed ID: 24689250; PubMed ID: 17020243). However, there is a significant gap between in vitro findings and clinical application. To date, there are no published human clinical trials evaluating the efficacy or safety of mangostin for treating fungal infections. The evidence is thus limited to laboratory research, and there is no established dosage, formulation, or regulatory approval for its use as an antifungal agent in humans. While traditional medicine systems in Southeast Asia have used mangosteen pericarp for various ailments, specific use for fungal infections is not well documented in ethnobotanical literature. In summary, mangostin’s antifungal potential is primarily supported by preclinical research. Its use for fungal infections cannot be recommended based on current clinical evidence, but scientific interest continues due to promising laboratory results.
