Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Plantain, which can refer to either the banana-like fruit (Musa spp.) or to the broadleaf medicinal plant (Plantago spp.), has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, for a variety of ailments including wounds, inflammation, and skin infections. The use of Plantago species (broadleaf plantain) in particular for fungal infections is based primarily on ethnobotanical reports and folk medicine practices. Traditional healers have employed poultices or infusions of plantain leaves to treat skin conditions, some of which may have included superficial fungal infections such as ringworm or athlete’s foot. However, there is limited direct scientific validation of its efficacy against fungal pathogens. Most studies on Plantago spp. focus on antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, with only a few in vitro studies suggesting mild antifungal activity in extracts. These findings are not robust enough to support clinical application. Therefore, the use of plantain for fungal infections is justified by tradition rather than scientific evidence, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence is weak.
