Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sophora species, particularly Sophora flavescens (commonly known as Ku Shen in traditional Chinese medicine), have a long history of traditional use to address fungal infections, especially of the skin. In Chinese medicine, Ku Shen is included in formulations for dermatological conditions, credited to its "heat-clearing" and "dampness-drying" properties, which are often associated with symptoms of fungal infections. The roots of Sophora flavescens contain alkaloids such as matrine and oxymatrine, which traditional texts claim have antipruritic and antimicrobial activities. Some modern pharmacological studies have shown that extracts from Sophora flavescens exhibit in vitro antifungal activity against various dermatophytes and Candida species, but these findings are preliminary and largely confined to laboratory settings. There is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans evaluating the efficacy and safety of Sophora extracts for treating fungal infections. Therefore, while its use is justified primarily by tradition and supported by some preclinical data, the overall quality and quantity of scientific evidence are insufficient to firmly validate its effectiveness for this indication. The traditional application remains the strongest basis for its use against fungal infections.
