Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terpinolene is a monoterpene found in various essential oils, including those of tea tree, sage, and rosemary. Its use for supporting or treating fungal infections is primarily based on scientific studies, though the evidence is limited and mostly preclinical. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that terpinolene exhibits antifungal activity against common pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. For example, research published in Fitoterapia (2012) and Journal of Applied Microbiology (2009) found that terpinolene, as a component of certain essential oils, contributed to the inhibition of fungal growth. However, these studies typically examine terpinolene in combination with other terpenes and constituents, making it difficult to attribute antifungal activity to terpinolene alone. There are very few, if any, clinical studies or robust animal models assessing terpinolene’s efficacy for treating fungal infections in humans. Thus, while laboratory evidence suggests terpinolene has antifungal properties, the data are preliminary and do not yet support its use as a standalone antifungal agent in clinical settings. More research, including human trials, is needed to establish its effectiveness and safety profile for this purpose.
