Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tree Turmeric (Berberis aristata), also known as Indian Barberry, is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including infections. The main bioactive compound in Tree Turmeric is berberine, which has been shown in several in vitro and animal studies to possess antifungal properties. Research indicates that berberine can inhibit the growth of certain fungal species such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus spp. by interfering with fungal cell membrane integrity and function.

However, the majority of the evidence for its antifungal effects comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than well-designed human clinical trials. While these studies suggest potential usefulness of Tree Turmeric or berberine extracts for fungal infections, clinical efficacy and safety in humans have not been conclusively established. Therefore, the scientific evidence supporting its use for fungal infections is present but limited, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
