Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Usnea, also known as "old man’s beard," is a lichen traditionally used in herbal medicine for its antimicrobial properties. There is some scientific basis for its use in supporting or treating fungal infections. Laboratory studies have shown that usnic acid, the primary active constituent in Usnea, exhibits antifungal activity against several pathogenic fungi, including Candida albicans and Aspergillus species. However, most of this evidence comes from in vitro (test tube) studies, which do not always translate to clinical effectiveness in humans.

There are very limited clinical studies or formal trials evaluating the efficacy or safety of Usnea preparations for fungal infections in humans. The available evidence is mostly preclinical, with a few case reports or small studies suggesting potential benefit. Traditional use and anecdotal reports also support its use as a topical agent for skin fungal infections, but robust clinical data are lacking.

Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some laboratory evidence supporting the antifungal properties of Usnea, more rigorous human studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety in treating fungal infections. As such, the evidence is rated as moderate to low (2/5), reflecting promising laboratory findings but insufficient clinical validation.
