Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Violet (Viola odorata and related species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including for skin conditions such as fungal infections. In various traditional systems, violet leaves and flowers have been applied topically or used in washes to treat minor skin ailments, which may have included fungal infections, due to their purported soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence specifically supporting the antifungal efficacy of violet extracts. Most modern research on Viola species focuses on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties, but studies directly evaluating their antifungal activity are limited, small in scale, or inconclusive. Therefore, while the use of violet for fungal infections is justified by tradition and historical precedent, its efficacy is not well supported by modern scientific research. As such, violet should not be considered a primary or evidence-based treatment for fungal infections, but may be used as a supplementary or supportive remedy in certain traditional medicine contexts.
