Evidence supporting the use of: Vitex negundo
For the health condition: Fungal Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including infections. Scientific investigations have demonstrated that extracts of Vitex negundo possess antifungal activity in vitro against several pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus spp., Candida albicans, and Trichophyton spp. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Indian Journal of Pharmacology) report that ethanol, methanol, and aqueous extracts from leaves and seeds inhibit the growth of these fungi in laboratory settings. Proposed active compounds include flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and essential oils, which are thought to disrupt fungal cell membranes or inhibit fungal enzymes.
However, the evidence is largely preclinical and limited to laboratory and animal models; robust human clinical trials demonstrating efficacy and safety for treating or supporting fungal infections are lacking. While these findings suggest a scientific basis for the antifungal properties of Vitex negundo, the strength of evidence is modest, and more rigorous studies are needed before it can be recommended for clinical use in fungal infections. Thus, the use of Vitex negundo for fungal infections is supported by preliminary scientific data, but not yet by strong clinical evidence.
