Evidence supporting the use of: Convolvulus prostratus
For the body system: GABA
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Convolvulus prostratus, also known as Shankhpushpi, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine as a brain tonic. It is traditionally used to support cognitive function, calm the mind, and promote relaxation. The rationale for its use to support the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) body system comes from its reputed anxiolytic and sedative properties, which are believed to help balance neurotransmitters and promote a calming effect, similar to the action of GABA in the central nervous system. However, most of the evidence for these effects is based on traditional usage and not on robust clinical trials.
Scientific studies on Convolvulus prostratus are limited and mostly preclinical. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of the plant may have anxiolytic and anticonvulsant activities, possibly through mechanisms that could involve the GABAergic system, but direct evidence of GABA modulation is lacking. There are no large, well-controlled human studies demonstrating a clear effect on the GABA system. Thus, while its use is primarily justified by traditional practices and some preliminary animal data, it cannot be considered scientifically validated for supporting the GABA body system at this time.
