Evidence supporting the use of: Indian Coraltree
For the body system: GABA
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Indian Coraltree (Erythrina variegata) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian herbal practices. Traditionally, the bark, leaves, and flowers of the plant have been used for their sedative, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant properties—effects that are thought to be related to modulation of the GABAergic system in the body. Some animal studies have supported these traditional uses, demonstrating that extracts of Erythrina variegata can induce central nervous system depression and exhibit anxiolytic effects, possibly through interactions with GABAA receptors. However, most of the evidence comes from preclinical studies in rodents, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans to confirm efficacy and safety. The use of Indian Coraltree for supporting the GABA system is thus primarily justified by its traditional application, with moderate preclinical support but insufficient scientific validation in humans. As a result, while it is reasonable to acknowledge its traditional use for calming and sedative purposes, it cannot be rated highly for scientific evidence until more rigorous studies are completed.
