Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Jujubosides are saponins derived from the seeds of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa, commonly known as sour jujube or Chinese date. In traditional Chinese medicine, these seeds (called “Suan Zao Ren”) have long been used as a sedative and to promote sleep, calm the mind, and alleviate anxiety. The traditional rationale for their use is based on centuries of empirical observation and their frequent inclusion in sleep-promoting herbal formulas. The connection to the GABAergic system is more recent, as some preclinical studies suggest that jujubosides may modulate GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system associated with relaxation and sleep.
Scientific studies, largely in animal models, have shown that jujubosides can increase the expression of GABA receptors or enhance GABAergic neurotransmission, which could underlie their sedative and anxiolytic effects. However, robust clinical evidence in humans is still lacking. Thus, while there is promising preclinical data indicating a possible mechanism via the GABA system, the primary justification for their use is traditional, with moderate supporting evidence from laboratory studies but limited validation from human clinical trials.
