Rating (out of 5): 3

Lithium is a well-established mood stabilizer, primarily used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Its connection to the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) system is supported by scientific research, though the precise mechanisms are complex and multifactorial. Several studies indicate that lithium can influence the GABAergic system in the brain. For example, lithium has been shown to increase GABA levels in certain brain regions and to enhance GABAergic neurotransmission, which may contribute to its mood-stabilizing effects. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and alterations in GABAergic activity are associated with mood disorders.

However, while lithium’s effects on GABA are documented, its clinical use is not solely or specifically targeted at “supporting the GABA system” in a general wellness context. Instead, its GABA-modulating properties are considered one aspect of its broader neurochemical effects, which also include modulation of glutamate, dopamine, and intracellular signaling pathways. The evidence supporting lithium’s action on GABA is moderate—largely based on animal studies, some neuroimaging in humans, and indirect clinical outcomes. Therefore, lithium’s connection to the GABA system is scientifically validated, but the strength of evidence specifically for “supporting the GABA system” outside psychiatric indications is moderate at best.
