Erythrina mulungu ("Mulungu") is a tree native to South America, and its bark and extracts have been traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine for their calming and sedative effects. The use of Mulungu is primarily based on traditional practices, where it is consumed as a tea or extract to help with anxiety, insomnia, and nervous system disorders. The rationale for its use in supporting the "GABA body system" is loosely tied to its sedative properties, as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and is associated with reduced neural excitability and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects.
Some preliminary scientific studies, mostly in animal models, suggest that Mulungu extracts may interact with GABAergic pathways.
