Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), a herb traditionally used in Western herbal medicine, has long been valued for its calming properties and is commonly recommended by herbalists to support relaxation, sleep, and nervous system health. Its traditional use is primarily linked to supporting the body’s response to stress and promoting calmness, which are effects often attributed to enhancement of GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acid) activity, as GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.

However, while there are some laboratory studies suggesting that extracts of skullcap may interact with GABA receptors or modulate GABA levels, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most of the available support comes from historical use and small-scale studies, rather than well-designed randomized clinical trials. The active compounds in skullcap, such as baicalin and baicalein, have shown anxiolytic and sedative effects in animal studies, possibly through GABA pathways, but the translation of these effects to humans remains unclear.
