Evidence supporting the use of: Bitter melon
For the body system: Gall Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia, where it is valued for its purported effects on digestion and liver health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, bitter melon is often used to "clear heat" and support the function of the liver and gallbladder, with the belief that its bitter principles can stimulate bile production and flow. This is thought to aid in digestion of fats and support the health of the gallbladder. However, while bitter melon is traditionally associated with liver and digestive support, there is very limited scientific research specifically validating its effects on the gallbladder. Most modern studies have focused on its anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties, rather than direct gallbladder support. As such, the use of bitter melon for gallbladder health is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. Its rating reflects the presence of traditional use but a lack of direct scientific validation for this specific application.
