Evidence supporting the use of: Fumaritory
For the body system: Gall Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting liver and gallbladder health. Historically, it has been employed as a cholagogue, meaning it was believed to stimulate bile flow, thus aiding in the digestion of fats and potentially alleviating symptoms related to gallbladder dysfunction, such as mild digestive discomfort and sluggishness. Traditional herbal texts from Europe and the Middle East reference fumitory for these purposes, and it is still included in some modern herbal formulations intended to support biliary function.
However, scientific validation for these claims is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that compounds in fumitory, such as alkaloids and flavonoids, may have mild choleretic (bile-boosting) activity, but well-controlled human clinical trials are lacking. The available scientific evidence is therefore not robust, and most recommendations for using fumitory in gallbladder support are based on traditional use rather than strong contemporary research. As such, its efficacy remains unproven by modern scientific standards, though its historical use is well documented.
