Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ghee, a form of clarified butter widely used in South Asian cooking and Ayurveda, is traditionally believed to support the gall bladder and overall digestive health. In Ayurvedic medicine, ghee is considered a "sattvic" food that nourishes body tissues, aids digestion, and lubricates the digestive tract. It is thought to stimulate the secretion of gastric acids and promote the flow of bile, a function of the gall bladder, thereby aiding in the digestion and absorption of fats. However, these claims are largely based on centuries-old tradition and Ayurvedic texts rather than rigorous scientific studies.

Modern scientific evidence supporting ghee specifically for gall bladder health is minimal. While ghee is rich in short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids, which may be easier to digest than long-chain fats, there is no direct clinical research demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting gall bladder function or preventing gall bladder disease. Some general studies suggest that moderate consumption of healthy fats can stimulate bile flow, which may theoretically support gall bladder health, but these studies do not focus on ghee specifically. Overall, the use of ghee for gall bladder support remains primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
