Evidence supporting the use of: Ginger
For the body system: Gall Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting digestive health, which is often indirectly linked to gall bladder function. Traditionally, ginger has been used to stimulate bile flow and improve digestion, both of which are associated with optimal gall bladder function. Historical texts and herbal compendia record its use for symptoms like indigestion, nausea, and colic, which sometimes relate to gall bladder issues. However, direct scientific evidence specifically supporting ginger’s use for gall bladder health is limited. While scientific studies have validated ginger’s general benefits for digestive motility, anti-inflammatory effects, and antiemetic properties, clinical trials or mechanistic studies directly examining ginger’s impact on gall bladder function or gallstone prevention are lacking. Thus, the use of ginger for supporting the gall bladder is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
