Guggulsterones are plant sterols found in the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, commonly known as guggul. In Ayurvedic medicine, guggul has been traditionally used for thousands of years to support various aspects of health, including the gallbladder and liver. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe guggul as a remedy for conditions such as "gallstones" and to promote bile flow, thus supporting digestion and fat metabolism. This traditional use is based on the belief that guggul helps to "scrape" and detoxify the body's channels, including those involved in bile production and flow.

However, while there is a rich tradition of using guggul for gallbladder and liver support, scientific studies specifically evaluating the effect of guggulsterones on gallbladder function are limited. Most modern research has focused on guggulsterones' effects on lipid metabolism, inflammation, and thyroid function. There is a lack of robust clinical trials directly linking guggulsterones to gallbladder health or prevention of gallstones. Therefore, the use of guggulsterones for gallbladder support is justified by traditional use rather than scientific validation. Future research may help clarify its mechanism of action and efficacy for this indication.
