Evidence supporting the use of: Picroside
For the body system: Gall Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Picroside is a primary active compound found in Picrorhiza kurroa, a plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Historically, Picrorhiza kurroa has been employed for its hepatoprotective (liver-protective) and choleretic (promoting bile flow) properties. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical records suggest its use for managing liver and gall bladder disorders, including jaundice, dyspepsia, and biliary dysfunctions. The choleretic action supports the rationale for its use in gall bladder conditions by potentially stimulating bile secretion and flow, which is thought to aid in digestion and gall bladder health.
Scientific studies primarily focus on hepatoprotective effects, with some preclinical studies indicating increased bile flow in animal models after administration of Picroside-containing extracts. However, robust clinical trials in humans directly addressing gall bladder diseases or dysfunction are lacking. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented and there is some supportive preclinical evidence for its role in stimulating bile secretion, the evidence base is not strong or comprehensive. Therefore, its use to support the gall bladder system is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with limited scientific validation at this time.
