Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Scabrous Gentian (Gentiana scabra) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is commonly known as "Long Dan Cao." In TCM, it is believed to "clear heat" and "drain dampness" from the liver and gall bladder channels, and is thus used to address symptoms associated with what TCM terms "damp-heat" in these organs—such as jaundice, red eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, and hypochondriac pain. The traditional application is well-documented in classical Chinese medical texts and is a component of several herbal formulas, such as Long Dan Xie Gan Tang, which is prescribed to support liver and gall bladder health.

However, scientific research directly validating the use of Scabrous Gentian for gall bladder health in terms of modern biomedical understanding is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties in gentian species, but these findings are not specific to gall bladder function and remain preliminary. There is no robust clinical evidence in peer-reviewed literature confirming efficacy for gall bladder support as understood by Western medicine. Thus, its use in this context is justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
