Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Sodium choleate is the sodium salt of cholic acid, a primary bile acid naturally produced in the liver. Its use in supporting the gall bladder and the overall biliary system is primarily based on its well-established physiological role in bile formation, fat emulsification, and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. In clinical and experimental contexts, sodium choleate and other bile salts have been used to restore or supplement bile acid levels in individuals with impaired bile secretion or after gall bladder removal (cholecystectomy). Scientific studies demonstrate that supplementation with bile salts can alleviate symptoms of fat malabsorption, steatorrhea, and dyspepsia associated with gall bladder dysfunction or biliary insufficiency (Hofmann, 1983; Gough et al., 1978). Additionally, bile salts like sodium choleate are utilized in pharmaceutical formulations to improve drug absorption and as experimental tools to study bile acid metabolism. However, the use of sodium choleate in over-the-counter supplements specifically targeted at "gall bladder support" is less well studied in healthy individuals, and clinical evidence for routine supplementation outside of specific medical indications is limited. Nevertheless, its physiological rationale and established use in medical settings justify a relatively high evidence rating for supporting the gall bladder and biliary function in cases of deficiency or dysfunction.
