Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taraxacin is a bitter compound found in the roots of Taraxacum officinale, commonly known as dandelion. Traditional herbal medicine systems, particularly in Europe and Asia, have long used dandelion root preparations to support liver and gall bladder health. The rationale is based on the herb’s reputed ability to stimulate bile production and flow, thereby aiding digestion and gall bladder function. The presence of bitter constituents like taraxacin is believed to trigger a reflex that increases secretion of digestive fluids, including bile.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating taraxacin’s effects on the gall bladder are lacking. While some preclinical research suggests that dandelion root extracts can have choleretic (bile-stimulating) effects, most studies use whole extracts rather than isolated taraxacin. Human clinical trials are rare, and those that exist are not robust or specific enough to confirm efficacy for gall bladder support. Overall, the use of taraxacin for gall bladder health is based primarily on longstanding traditional use rather than direct scientific validation.
