Taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) is a taurine-conjugated bile acid naturally produced in the liver and secreted into bile. Its primary physiological role is in the emulsification and absorption of dietary fats, a key function of the gall bladder and biliary system. Scientific evidence supports its use in supporting gall bladder and biliary health, particularly in the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. TCDCA, along with other bile acids such as ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), has been studied for its ability to decrease cholesterol saturation in bile, thereby reducing the formation and promoting the dissolution of gallstones. Clinical studies have shown that oral bile acid therapy, including CDCA and its taurine-conjugated form (TCDCA), can gradually dissolve small cholesterol gallstones and improve bile flow. While TCDCA is not commonly used as a direct supplement in humans (UDCA and CDCA are more commonly prescribed), its physiological and pharmacological actions are well established in scientific literature. Additionally, TCDCA is used in research and veterinary contexts for similar purposes. In summary, substantial scientific evidence underpins the role of TCDCA and related bile acids in gall bladder health, particularly in gallstone management and the facilitation of biliary lipid metabolism.
