Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Taurodeoxycholic acid (TDCA) is a taurine-conjugated form of deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile acid naturally present in the bile of mammals. Scientific studies have demonstrated that bile acids, including TDCA, play critical roles in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins by emulsifying lipids in the intestine. They also aid in cholesterol homeostasis and the solubilization of cholesterol, preventing gallstone formation. In clinical and experimental studies, bile acid supplements (such as ursodeoxycholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and tauro-conjugated forms) have been used to treat certain cholestatic liver and gallbladder diseases, such as gallstones and primary biliary cholangitis, by improving bile flow and reducing bile toxicity.
While TDCA is less commonly used directly as a therapeutic agent compared to ursodeoxycholic acid, its mechanism of action is well understood, and it is a natural constituent of bile. Research in animal models indicates that TDCA can modulate bile composition and promote gallbladder motility, potentially reducing the risk of bile stasis and gallstone formation. However, most clinical use in humans relies on other bile acids with more established safety and efficacy profiles. Overall, the scientific basis for using bile acids, including TDCA, to support gallbladder function is strong, though direct supplementation with TDCA is less common than other bile acid derivatives.
