Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica (Angelica archangelica) has a long history of use in traditional European and Asian herbal medicine, particularly for supporting digestive health, including issues related to the gall bladder. Traditional herbalists have used Angelica root as a carminative, cholagogue (stimulating bile flow), and to ease symptoms of "sluggish" digestion, which are often associated with gall bladder dysfunction. The rationale was that by promoting bile secretion, Angelica might help with fat digestion and relieve discomfort after fatty meals—symptoms commonly reported by people with gall bladder issues, including those who have had their gall bladder removed.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating Angelica’s effects on the gall bladder, bile production, or post-cholecystectomy symptoms are very limited. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on historical texts. Some in vitro research suggests that compounds in Angelica may have spasmolytic and digestive-aiding properties, but direct clinical evidence for use in gall bladder conditions is lacking. Therefore, the justification for using Angelica in this context is primarily traditional, with minimal scientific validation.
