Evidence supporting the use of: Cholic acids (unspecified)
For the health condition: Gall Bladder (sluggish or removed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Cholic acid is a primary bile acid produced naturally in the liver and is an essential component of bile, which aids in the digestion and absorption of fats. Its use as a supplement or medication is scientifically validated, but with specific indications. Cholic acid is FDA-approved for the treatment of rare bile acid synthesis disorders due to single enzyme deficiencies (such as bile acid synthesis disorders caused by mutations in CYP7A1 or CYP27A1), not for general gallbladder support. In patients with a sluggish or removed gallbladder, the body may have difficulty regulating bile flow, leading to fat malabsorption. There is some rationale for using bile acids or bile acid supplements (including cholic acid) to support fat digestion in such individuals, particularly when symptoms of fat malabsorption are present. However, most clinical use for gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) involves ox bile or other bile salt supplements rather than pure cholic acid, and direct evidence for cholic acid supplementation in this setting is limited. The evidence rating is moderate (3/5) because while the physiological rationale exists and cholic acid is critical in bile function, robust clinical trials in the context of gallbladder removal or dysfunction are lacking. Most recommendations are extrapolated from its role in bile acid deficiency disorders rather than direct studies on gallbladder disease or post-cholecystectomy states.
