Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fragrant Angelica (commonly referring to Angelica dahurica or Angelica archangelica) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and European herbalism. In TCM, various species of Angelica are believed to "regulate Qi," "dispel wind," and support digestive organs, including the liver and gallbladder. Traditional texts mention its use for symptoms such as abdominal pain, distension, and indigestion, some of which could be associated with gallbladder dysfunction. However, references to Angelica specifically for "sluggish" or removed gallbladders are indirect, with the herb more often used in formulas for general digestive and hepatic support.

Scientific validation for Angelica’s effects on gallbladder health is very limited. Some preclinical studies suggest Angelica species may have mild choleretic (bile-stimulating) or spasmolytic effects, but there is no robust clinical evidence supporting its use for gallbladder function in humans or for compensating after gallbladder removal. No significant clinical trials or systematic reviews recommend Angelica for gallbladder support post-cholecystectomy. Therefore, its use in this context is grounded primarily in tradition rather than science.
