Evidence supporting the use of: Kefir
For the health condition: Gall Bladder (sluggish or removed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Kefir is traditionally promoted for digestive health, including for people with gall bladder issues (such as sluggish gallbladder function or post-cholecystectomy). Folk practices and some natural health traditions suggest that kefir's probiotic content can support bile flow and aid digestion, especially after gall bladder removal, when bile secretion is no longer regulated in the same way. However, scientific research directly linking kefir consumption to improved gall bladder function or symptom relief after gall bladder removal is sparse. Some small studies and theoretical reasoning propose that the probiotics and bioactive compounds in kefir may enhance gut microbiota diversity, which can be disrupted after gall bladder surgery, and may support fat digestion indirectly by promoting a healthier digestive environment. Nonetheless, no robust clinical trials specifically support its use for gall bladder conditions. Most recommendations are thus rooted in tradition and extrapolation from kefir’s general digestive benefits rather than targeted scientific validation.
