Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taraxacum mongolicum, commonly known as Chinese dandelion, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting liver and gall bladder health. In TCM, it is believed to "clear heat" and "resolve toxicity," and is used for conditions such as jaundice, poor digestion, and gall bladder inflammation. Historical texts and herbal compendiums describe its use for promoting bile flow and addressing symptoms believed to be associated with sluggish gall bladder function. However, modern scientific research specifically examining Taraxacum mongolicum’s effects on gall bladder function—especially in cases of gall bladder removal (cholecystectomy)—is limited. Some animal studies on related dandelion species (such as Taraxacum officinale) suggest a mild choleretic effect (increasing bile secretion), but evidence is neither robust nor specific to Taraxacum mongolicum. No high-quality human clinical trials exist to confirm its efficacy for gall bladder conditions. Thus, its use for gall bladder support is primarily justified by traditional practice, and the scientific evidence remains insufficient.
