Evidence supporting the use of: Taurocholic acid
For the health condition: Gall Bladder (sluggish or removed)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Taurocholic acid is a bile acid naturally produced in the liver by conjugation of cholic acid with taurine. It plays an essential role in emulsifying fats and facilitating their absorption in the small intestine. In cases where the gallbladder is sluggish (biliary dyskinesia) or has been removed (cholecystectomy), some clinicians and supplement manufacturers propose the use of bile acids, including taurocholic acid, to improve fat digestion and reduce symptoms such as steatorrhea (fatty stools) and indigestion. The scientific rationale is that exogenous bile acids may compensate for altered or insufficient bile secretion and flow. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of taurocholic acid supplements specifically for gallbladder dysfunction or post-cholecystectomy management is limited. Most research and therapeutic use in this context focus on other bile acids, such as ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) or chenodeoxycholic acid, which have more established clinical applications for certain liver and biliary conditions. There are animal studies and some indirect evidence suggesting that bile acid supplementation can improve fat absorption in the absence of the gallbladder, but robust, controlled human trials specifically examining taurocholic acid are lacking. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some mechanistic evidence, direct clinical research on taurocholic acid for supporting gallbladder function or post-removal symptoms is limited, and the overall evidence base remains weak.
