Evidence supporting the use of: Borassus aethiopum
For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as the African fan palm, is a plant found throughout tropical Africa and is widely used in traditional medicine. Its use for the treatment or support of gall stones is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Ethnobotanical surveys from some West African regions, such as Nigeria and Ghana, document the use of the roots, fruits, or sap of Borassus aethiopum for various hepatic and digestive disorders, including what is described by traditional healers as “gall complaints” or “stones.” These practices are based largely on indigenous knowledge and anecdotal reports passed down through generations. However, there is a lack of clearly defined clinical trials, laboratory studies, or phytochemical analyses that directly support its efficacy or mechanism in the dissolution or prevention of gall stones. Some preliminary studies have identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of the plant, but these are not directly linked to gall stone treatment. Therefore, while its use for gall stones is part of traditional medicine in some African cultures, the scientific support for this use is minimal to nonexistent, and further research would be required to validate its efficacy and safety for gall stone management.
