Evidence supporting the use of: Indian bael
For the health condition: Gall Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Indian bael (Aegle marmelos) has a long history of use in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine for various digestive ailments, including gallstones (cholelithiasis). In Ayurvedic texts, bael fruit, leaves, and roots are described as having properties that support digestion, reduce inflammation, and help in the removal of toxins from the body. Some traditional practitioners believe that bael may help dissolve or prevent gallstones by improving bile flow and liver function, as well as by its purported lithotriptic (stone-breaking) activity, though these claims are primarily based on empirical use and traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific studies.
From a scientific perspective, there is very limited direct evidence supporting the use of Indian bael for gallstones. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that bael may have hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, there is little direct research assessing its impact on gallstone formation or dissolution. The evidence largely comes from traditional texts and anecdotal reports rather than clinical trials or systematic studies. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, scientific validation for Indian bael’s efficacy in treating or preventing gallstones is minimal at this time.
