Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Madder (Rubia cordifolia) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Unani, for supporting the management of gallstones. In these traditions, Madder is believed to have lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) and choleretic (stimulating bile flow) properties, which are thought to help in breaking down and expelling gallstones. The root is commonly included in herbal formulations intended for liver and gallbladder health. However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. There are only a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting potential effects on bile flow or stone dissolution, and these are preliminary. No robust clinical trials in humans have confirmed its efficacy or safety for gallstone treatment. Therefore, while its use is rooted in traditional medicinal systems, contemporary scientific validation is lacking. Caution is advised when considering traditional remedies for gallstones, as inappropriate use could lead to complications, and medical supervision is recommended.
