Amylase is an enzyme responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates (starches) into simpler sugars during digestion. It is naturally produced in the human body, primarily by the saliva and pancreas. Over-the-counter digestive enzyme supplements, often containing amylase, are marketed to individuals who experience digestive discomfort, including gas and bloating, especially after consuming starchy foods. The rationale behind using amylase for these symptoms is that incomplete digestion of carbohydrates can lead to fermentation by gut bacteria, producing gas and causing bloating. There is some scientific basis for this use: studies suggest that certain individuals, such as those with pancreatic insufficiency or other digestive enzyme deficiencies, may benefit from supplemental enzymes, including amylase. In these populations, enzyme supplements have been shown to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating and flatulence. However, in healthy individuals without enzyme deficiencies, the evidence is less robust. Most clinical studies focus on broader digestive enzyme blends rather than isolated amylase, and the quality of evidence varies, with relatively few large, well-controlled studies directly linking amylase supplementation alone to reduced gas and bloating. Overall, the use of amylase for gas and bloating is scientifically plausible and supported by moderate evidence in populations with enzyme deficiencies, but the benefits for the general population remain uncertain.
