Enzyme blends typically contain proteases, lipases, and amylases, as well as other specific enzymes like lactase or alpha-galactosidase, which help break down proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other complex foods that can contribute to digestive discomfort. Several randomized controlled trials and clinical studies have demonstrated that supplemental digestive enzymes can reduce symptoms of gas, bloating, and fullness, particularly in individuals with enzyme deficiencies (such as lactose intolerance or pancreatic insufficiency) or those who experience symptoms after eating specific foods. For example, research published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2011) found that multi-enzyme preparations significantly decreased postprandial bloating and flatulence in patients with functional dyspepsia. Another study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology (2013) reported that enzyme supplements improved symptoms of gas and bloating in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
