Evidence supporting the use of: Bifobacterium (mixed)
For the health condition: Gastritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) is used to support or treat gastritis based on some emerging scientific evidence, though the strength of evidence remains modest. Gastritis, characterized by inflammation of the stomach lining, is commonly associated with Helicobacter pylori infection and/or NSAID use. Several studies have explored the role of probiotics, including mixed Bifidobacterium species, in gastrointestinal health. Some clinical research suggests that probiotics can help restore the balance of gut microbiota, reduce gastric inflammation, and possibly enhance eradication rates of H. pylori when used alongside standard antibiotic therapy.
Specifically, Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics may exert beneficial effects through competitive inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, modulation of immune responses, and strengthening of the mucosal barrier. A few randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with Bifidobacterium, often in combination with Lactobacillus species, can reduce gastrointestinal symptoms and improve histological markers of gastritis. However, most studies are small, use mixed probiotic preparations, and vary in methodology, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to Bifidobacterium or to generalize the findings.
Overall, while there is scientific interest and some preliminary support for the use of Bifidobacterium (mixed) in gastritis, the evidence is not yet robust or consistent enough to make strong clinical recommendations. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to clarify its efficacy and optimal strains/dosing. Thus, the use is scientifically motivated, but the quality and quantity of evidence currently available are moderate at best.
