Evidence supporting the use of: Irish Moss
For the health condition: Gastritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus), a type of red seaweed, has been used traditionally in Ireland and other cultures as a remedy for gastrointestinal ailments, including gastritis. Its use is rooted in folklore and herbal medicine practices, where it is valued for its mucilaginous (gel-like) properties. This mucilage is believed to coat and soothe the mucous membranes of the digestive tract, potentially providing symptomatic relief in cases of gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining. However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific condition is limited. While Irish Moss contains bioactive compounds (such as carrageenan) that may have anti-inflammatory and demulcent effects, there are no robust clinical trials or high-quality studies directly evaluating its benefit in treating or managing gastritis in humans. Most claims are extrapolated from its traditional uses or from in vitro studies showing mild anti-inflammatory actions. Additionally, concerns exist regarding the safety of carrageenan (a component isolated from Irish Moss) in processed forms, though these concerns are more relevant to degraded carrageenan, not the whole seaweed as used in traditional remedies. In summary, the use of Irish Moss for gastritis is justified by tradition, not strong scientific evidence.
