Common Thatching grass (Hyparrhenia rufa), also known as spear grass, has a history of traditional use in various African and Asian cultures for managing gastrointestinal tract (GIT) issues. Ethnobotanical studies document its use as a remedy for stomach aches, diarrhea, and other digestive disturbances. Preparations often involve infusions or decoctions of the grass, sometimes in combination with other herbs. The rationale in traditional settings is largely based on experiential knowledge passed down through generations, rather than on identified active compounds or mechanisms of action.

Scientific validation, however, remains limited. While a few preliminary studies have suggested that extracts from Common Thatching grass may exhibit antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects in vitro or in animal models, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. No definitive studies directly confirm its efficacy or safety for supporting gastrointestinal health in people.
