Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been studied for its role in managing various gastrointestinal conditions, including infections caused by Giardia lamblia (giardiasis). Several clinical trials and animal studies have investigated its efficacy as an adjunct to standard anti-parasitic treatments. The mechanism by which S. boulardii supports treatment of Giardia includes modulation of the host’s immune response, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, and competitive inhibition of pathogen adhesion. Notably, a double-blind, randomized controlled trial conducted in children demonstrated that S. boulardii supplementation alongside metronidazole led to a higher eradication rate of Giardia and a reduction in symptoms compared to metronidazole alone. Additional in vitro and animal studies suggest that S. boulardii can reduce Giardia trophozoite attachment to intestinal epithelial cells and decrease intestinal inflammation.

While these findings are promising, S. boulardii is generally recommended as an adjunct rather than a sole therapy. The overall evidence base is moderate: several small clinical trials and mechanistic studies support its use, but larger and more rigorous studies are needed to define its efficacy and optimal dosing. Thus, the use of S. boulardii in Giardia infection is scientifically justified as a supportive measure, especially for reducing gastrointestinal symptoms and possibly improving eradication rates when combined with standard anti-parasitic agents.
